The point is that we need our database, (and more importantly, the wealth of information contained therein) and while our database may live at the office, we don’t.
But we have options, and below I will list a few of those!
· ACT! Premium for Web: You host your database on your website, and your team logs in via the internet. You use your server and resources, and you maintain it. This can be great for companies that have the resources.
· ACT! Hosted: ACT! has a subscription, web-based option called ACT! Hosted. They maintain the system and you always have the most recent version. This can be the most low-maintenance option, however a 3 user minimum is required.
· Remote Databases: While some of us have the database at the office, we may carry a laptop for travel and even for home. In this scenario, a Remote copy of your database can be created and deployed to the laptop, and it can sync back to the master database. I believe that the easiest, most reliable way to do that is with ACT! Premium Network Sync via a Hamachi VPN.
· Remote Connections to the Main Database: Another option is to connect to the host computer and use the main database (and everything else on the host computer) as if we were in the office. This can be done with the (Windows system included) Remote Desktop Connection, or with 3rd party software such as LogMeIn, GoToAssist, and Teamviewer. While I believe that each of these programs has a decent free option, they may require some set-up assistance and you will want to be sure that your virus protection is current (anytime you open your system for inbound connections, you want to be sure that those connections are “filtered”), this can be a simple, cost-effective, single-user solution. The “cons” of this include slow connections and the ability to see screens which will be smaller when viewed “2nd hand”. For the "do-it-yourself-er" with no available budget, a wealth of knowledge can be found on the internet, and even video on YouTube to walk you through the process.
While this is an overview of options allowing you “mobility”, it does not even begin to touch the subject of options for phone, tablets, and other small devices. Maybe I’ll save that for another day.
With ACT!, it’s the good news and the bad news that there is no “one size fits all” solution: It is an extremely flexible, customizable way to keep your clients/customers organized. To discuss your needs, please call!
